Becoming a surrogate is an amazing opportunity for both the surrogate and the intended parents. Here are a few things to consider before applying to become a surrogate:

What relationship you want to have with the family
Some surrogates want to stay in touch with the new family well after the baby is born. Others want minimal interaction with the family. Surrogacy agencies will ask you what relationship you’d like to have with the new parents, and that will help match you with a couple who wants something similar.

Your current mental and physical health
Before applying, think about where you’re at mentally and physically. Feelings of constant stress or anxiety might be a sign that you don’t want to add more to your plate. Having support systems and positive attitudes are some of the most important pieces to successful surrogacies. Surrogacy clinics like Open Arms also require surrogates to be between 21-40 years old and have a BMI of less than 30. Consider that information as well before applying.

How well you enjoyed previous pregnancies
Some people love being pregnant, and that’s amazing! If you loved being pregnant, consider applying to become a surrogate. At Open Arms, we require surrogate applicants to have at least one child through an uncomplicated pregnancy and have custody of that child.

Your relationship with your partner and current family
If you have a significant other or spouse, talk to them about your decision and ask for their support. Given the mounds of misinformation about surrogacy floating around online, there’s a good chance they’ll have questions. We can help answer them as best we can! We want every surrogate to feel supported during the process, especially at home. An important part of the application process is having a solid support system in place to encourage and take care of you and the baby.

We love seeing surrogates help intended parents experience a new baby! At Open Arms, we offer some of the most competitive compensation around, regardless of employment or insurance status.
