Just hours after announcing the birth of their twin babies on Sunday, revered Indian actress Nayanthara and her husband, Indian filmmaker Vignesh Shivan faced severe backlash over using surrogacy as their means of starting a family.
Government officials of the state of Tamil Nadu are launching an investigation into the processes of the famed couple’s surrogacy, as strict state laws contain highly specific rules that must be followed. Surrogacy is still highly controversial in the State, as well as many other lifestyle choices.
Just yesterday, a transgender woman’s hair was forcibly cut as she was mocked by two men residing in the State. Although the men were arrested, the hate crime is indicative of prevalent attitudes towards what many people throughout the region deem as wrongful lifestyle attitudes.
